New 357 Area Code

357 Area Code Overlay In The California 559 Region

The California Public Utilities Commission has successfully implemented the 357 area code in the geographic area served by the 559 area code. This change was introduced to ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers in central California. What is in place now? The 357 area code has been added to the same geographic region as the 559 area code through an overlay. Customers did not have to change their existing numbers. However, all calls now require the new dialing procedure : • From landlines: 1 + area code + seven-digit telephone number • From wireless phones: area code + seven-digit telephone number or 1 + area code + seven-digit telephone number Who is affected? The overlay applies to all residents, businesses, and organizations in the 559 and 357 area codes, covering Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Tulare, and Kings Counties, including cities such as Clovis, Coalinga, Fresno, Madera, Porterville, Reedley, Selma, and Visalia. What changed? • Dialing procedure: All local calls that were previously dialed with 7 digits must now be dialed using 11 digits (1 + area code + number). • New numbers: Since March 26, 2025, new telephone lines or services in the region have been assigned numbers with the 357 area code. What updates are required? Residents and businesses must reprogram services, devices, and systems that previously relied on 7-digit dialing. This includes: • Life-safety systems and medical monitoring devices • PBXs, fax machines, and internet dial-up numbers • Fire/burglar alarms, security systems, and gates • Contact lists, speed dialers, call forwarding, and voicemail services • Stationery, checks, advertisements, websites, and ID tags
