Long Distance Dialing You must select a specific long distance company to handle all tele- phone calls being made to points outside your local calling area. Rates and regulations vary between companies and some companies bill separately, so you should select the long distance company that best meets the calling needs for you and/or your business. Some long dis- tance companies may require you to establish an account with them before using their services. Each company is different, so make sure you ask. You are responsible for all long distance calls placed from your telephone. If you hold a telephone calling card, you will be held responsible for all authorized charges made to that number. Long distance calls are usually less expensive during evening and night hours, weekends and on holidays. You should contact your long distance company for more information about specific rates and plans. To verify your long distance company, dial 1-700-555-4141 . You can determine if you have been “slammed” — if your long distance company has been changed without your knowledge — by dialing this number. For your protection, you should always contact your local tele- phone company if you decide to change your long distance provider. Types Of Operator-Assisted Calls Collect Calls: The party you are dialing agrees to pay the charges. Person-To-Person Calls: Call person-to-person when you wish to reach a particular party. This is the most expensive type of long distance service. Third Party Calls: Bill long distance charges to an authorized third telephone number. Access Charges The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implemented access charges which permit local telephone companies to recover the cost of facilities connecting homes and businesses with the telephone company’s network. Customers with more than a single business line at a particular loca- tion or one business line at several locations, or any combination of business lines, PBX trunks or semi-public business coin lines, are considered multi-line business customers. Lifeline And Link-Up Lifeline Assistance and Link-Up are public programs implement- ed by local telephone companies that help eligible households pay for basic telephone hook-up costs and monthly services. Lifeline Assistance helps customers who already have telephone service reduce their monthly phone bills, while Link-Up helps eligible customers receive a discount on installation of service.
