WK&T will continue to pursue innovative ways to improve its service area. Eligible Telecommunications Carrier On December 17, 1997, the Tennessee Regulatory Authority designated West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative as the Eligible Telecommunications Carrier within its service area for universal service purposes. The goal of universal service is to provide all Tennessee citizens access to essential telecommunications services. West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative provides single pa y residence with unlimited local usage and business service for reasonable rates each month.

For nearly 74 years, bringing high-tech solutions to rural areas in Western Kentucky and Tennessee has always been the primary purpose for WK&T. The cooperative’s first Rural Electrification Administration loan was received in 1953 with construction sta ing in that year. The cutover was in 1955 giving telecommunications services to 1,350 residences through 10 exchanges. Althoughitwasaneight-pa yserviceasprovidedbyREAspecification, it was a modern dial service. W.L. Parr was appointed manager and served until his death in 1962. A er Parr’s death, Percy Finks was appointed as manager in 1962, and he served until his retirement in 1976. Then Glen B. Sears took over the reins of management until his retirement in 1998. In February 1998, Trevor R. Bonnste er became the fou h general manager of WK&T, coming from River Valley Telephone Cooperative in Grae inger, Iowa. Under the direction of Bonnste er, WK&T has grown into a world-class telecommunications company, providing modern and up-to-date services to rural citizens of Western Kentucky and No hwest Tennessee. In 2009, WK&T pursued and was awarded a $123.8 million grant/loan through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — the largest amount awarded by the federal government that year through the Broadband Initiatives Program. Since then, WK&T has continued to impact and grow its service area, providing the critical infrastructure to suppo and enrich the lives of residents and businesses in Weakley and Henry counties. West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative would be pleased to provide you with specific rates for your area upon request. Beginning Jan 1, 1998, West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative began offering qualified customers Lifeline Assistance. You may qualify for Lifeline Assistance if you meet low-income eligibility requirements. Lifeline Assistance includes a monthly discount for basic phone charges, as well as toll blocking to qualifying customers. Recognizing Telephone Company Employees For your protection, every telephone company employee wears WK&T apparel and drives a vehicle with the WK&T logo on the side.
