Types of Long Distance Calling Direct-Dial calls are the least expensive type of calls. When you dial direct, without operator assistance, you are charged the lowest rate. An operator-assisted call occurs when you need an operator’s assistance for any reason. Examples of such calls are coin, collect, third number, time and charge and conference. Person-to-Person Calling person-to-person is an efficient use of your long distance dollars. It ensures that you will only be charged for the call if a particular person or specific extension you are calling is available. Collect Collect calls are especially convenient if you are calling from a pay phone and you don’t have the required change. The operator will ask the person you are calling to accept charges for the call. Toll Free Number for Home or Work Businesses have used toll free numbers for years, enabling out-of-town clients to call without being charged. It’s a great way to keep customers. Here’s how you can use toll free numbers for your home: • A daughter at college can call home without placing a collect call. • A spouse away on business can call home directly, hassle free.
