California State Mining & Mineral Museum Mariposa’s Only State Park

On display at the museum is the historic “Fricot Nugget.” The Fricot is not just a gold nugget as the name implies, but is actually a magnificent crystallized gold specimen taken from the Grit mine at Spanish Dry Diggins in El Dorado County in 1865. The Fricot is one of the finest and largest crystallized native gold nuggets found during the gold rush era and is part of the California Mineral Collection housed at the museum. Museum exhibits include a working model of a stamp mill, exhibits on mining history and how minerals are used today, and the State Mineral Collection started in 1880 as the Official State of California State Mineral Collection. The California State Mining and Mineral Museum Association maintains a gift store inside the museum that displays and sells books, jewelry and quality mineral specimens.
