You can also make one-time contributions to this program. To contribute, contact Adams at 217-696-4611. ARE THERE ANY PROGRAMS TO HELP WITH PAYING MY TELEPHONE OR BROADBAND INTERNET BILL? Lifeline and Link-Up are governmental programs that offer financial assistance to eligible low-income people with the cost of phone installation and basic local phone service or broadband Internet service. To qualify for assistance, households must participate in one of the following governmental programs: Federal Public Housing Assistance Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or Veteran’s Pension or Survivor’s Benefit Programs. Households with income equal to or less than 135% of Federal Poverty Guidelines will qualify. This program is not available in all exchanges. WHAT DOES OVERLAY MEAN? An overlay is the addi on of another area code to the same geographic area as an exis ng area code. New area codes are added to the exis ng area to ensure a con nuing supply of phone numbers. An overlay means that more than one area code will now serve the same geographic area. WHY IS IT CHANGING? • The new 447 area code will address the deple on of prefixes available for assignment within the region. WHAT DOES NOT CHANGE: • Your telephone number will not change. • Long distance rates will not change. • Dialing 911, 311, 211 or any other 3-digit services will not change. WHAT CONSUMERS CAN EXPECT:

FACTS ABOUT LONG DISTANCE SERVICE Types Of Calls INTERNATIONAL CALLING You may place international calls by two methods: Direct Dial (No Operator Assistance) To place an international call directly, dial: 011 + (country code) + (city code) + (local number) Operator Assistance To place an international call with operator assistance, dial: 01 + (country code) + (city code) + (local number) Wait for a special tone and operator to answer. After dialing any international call, allow at least 45 seconds for ringing to start.
OPERATOR ASSISTED CALLS Station-to-Station
Call station-to-station if you will speak with anyone who answers. Rates are lower than person-to-person. Charging begins when the called party answers. Person-to-Person Call person-to-person when you must talk to a particular person or extension telephone. Rates are higher than station-to-station. Charging starts when conversation begins. Collect You can make most calls “collect” if the person you are calling agrees to pay the charge. If you want to make a collect call, please be sure to tell the Operator when you give him/her the phone number. WARNING Illinois law defines harassment by telephone as the use of telephone communication for any of the following purposes: • Making one or repeated telephone calls (whether or not conversation occurs) with intent to abuse, threaten or harass; • Causing the telephone of another to ring repeatedly with the intent to harass; • Knowingly allowing any telephone under one’s control to be used for any of the above. HOW ARE CALLS BILLED? Calls completed through the Relay Center are billed at regular telephone company rates. There are no extra charges. For example, a person in Mendon calls a friend in Carbondale using the Relay Center. The person will not be billed for the call from Mendon to the Relay Center, or for the call from the Relay Center to Carbondale. The caller is billed only for a direct call between Mendon and Carbondale. Billing options include collect calls, calling card calls, calls billed to a third number, and person-to-person calls. WHO DO I CALL IN AN EMERGENCY? TTY users should dial their local emergency numbers directly using their TTY. During an emergency, if a TTY caller provides a relay operator with an emergency number that can be directly dialed, the relay operator will attempt to complete this call. ARE OTHER SERVICES AVAILABLE? ITAC also distributes TTY’s and amplified phones at no charge to qualified Illinois residents. WHAT IS IT? Illinois Relay Service is a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week service provided by Adams Telephone Co-Operative in cooperation with the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corp (ITAC). The service is a communications link between those who use a Text Telephone (TTY) and those who use a standard voice telephone. TTY’s are special typewriter-style devices used by persons who are hard of hearing, deaf or voice-impaired to communicate over the telephone. HOW DOES IT WORK? Specially trained operators relay conversations between TTY users and hearing people who use a standard voice telephone. The relay operator types the hearing caller’s spoken words to the TTY caller. The operator then speaks the typed words received from the TTY caller to the hearing person. The operator acts as a go-between throughout the entire conversation. All calls made through the Relay Center are kept strictly confidential. Employees may not disclose any communication they have seen or heard, and no record of the call is kept, other than for billing purposes. A special feature, known as “voice carry over,” makes it possible for a deaf or hard of hearing caller with good speech skills to talk directly to the hearing caller. With this feature, the relay operator types only the hearing caller’s voice response back to the TTY caller. HOW DO YOU USE THE SERVICE?
