Each state is free to design its own system, providing the level and quality of service meets the ADA guidelines. Relay Service was established in Arkansas in 1992. Act 1000 of 1997 created the Arkansas Deaf and Hearing Impaired Telecommunications Services (ADHITS) Board to administer the Relay Service in Arkansas. Funding is provided by a 7 cent surcharge to cover the service, per line, capped at 100 per location. The rate may be changed as needed by the ADHITS board and the Arkansas legislature. Getting More From Directory Assistance If you need two phone numbers at the same time, request both on the same directory assistance call and the second number is available at no extra charge if it is the same Area Code as your first request. Please notify the Operator in advance if you want a second number. You can avoid an unsuccessful directory assistance call by giving the Operator as much information as possible – exact location, accurate spelling, full name. When you obtain frequently called numbers, just write them down in your telephone directory or your personal phone directory. Highlighting frequently called numbers in the white pages is also very helpful. Your Privacy Your privacy is important to us. We strive to protect it. The Americans With Disabilities Act and the Arkansas Relay Service The Americans with Disabilities Act, signed into law in July 1991, requires that all telecommunications utilities provide access to their services by telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDD). To make a Voice to TDD or a TDD to Voice call, a Relay Service must be available. Relay service must be accessible toll-free from anywhere in the state, and must provide 100% confidential, professionally handled calls. All toll calls are billable only from actual locations of the end users. There will be no direct cost to any end user for using the Relay Service for local calls.
