Teach children how to dial 9-1-1 in an emergency. Learn the emergency action steps: • Check the scene and the victim to see if it’s safe and assess the cause. • Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number and request professional assistance.

• Care for the victim if you can reach the person safely.

Disaster preparedness can provide an additional spectrum of possible responses when emergencies occur. Check with your local American Red Cross chapter for class descriptions, times, costs, and information about disaster preparedness presentation.

Get Trained Properly administered first aid or CPR can help stabilize an injured or ailing person until professional help arrives. Make sure that at least one member of your household is trained in first aid, CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and you’ll be able to help anyone, whether in your home, at your job, in your neighborhood or in your community. This booklet is not a substitute for first aid and CPR/AED training offered by your local Red Cross chapter but pro- vides basic information on the ‘get trained’ step.
