Protecting Yourself in the Long-Distance Game How NCTC Members Can Prevent Being “Slammed”

Without such contact, you may fall victim to “slamming.” That means changing your long-distance service without your full knowledge or consent. If you change your long-distance carrier, you must also contact your new long-distance carrier to set up a billing procedure. If you don’t, your new carrier will charge you the “casual dialing” rate for your long-distance calls. This rate is typically higher than the one that may have convinced you to switch. You can have your long-distance carrier “frozen” so that it cannot be changed without your personal consent. If, however, you are a NCTC Long Distance customer, your service was frozen when you signed up. This means you never have to worry about your choice being changed. NCTC wants you to understand all the implications of changes in your long-distance service. If you want to confirm that your current long-distance carrier is the one you’ve actually chosen, you can call this number: 1-700-555-4141 .

NCTC customers can choose their long-distance carriers for interLA TA and intraLATA long-distance calls. This allows customers to use the same long-distance carrier for all long-distance calls or to choose long-distance carriers based on their specific calling needs.

If you would like to change your intraLATA or interLATA long-distance carrier, if you have any questions about who your long-distance carriers are or who your choices are for long-dis tance calling, please call NCTC at (615) 666-2151 in Tennessee or (270) 622 7500 in Kentucky. According to the Federal Communications Commis sion, local exchange carri ers like NCTC can no longer contact customers to verify requested changes in their long-distance service.
