CHURCHILL COUNTY COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Churchill County Churchill County is located in Northwestern Nevada within an area once covered by prehistoric Lake Lahontan. The first explorers started to visit this vast land in the 1820s. The discovery of gold in California in 1849 profoundly affected the land we now know as Churchill County. In one year, over 25,000 people crossed the desert in wagons, on foot and on horseback. The first permanent settle- ment in the area was called “Ragtown,” an emigrant station estab- lished in 1855 to sell provisions to those who survived the perilous crossing. The county, named after Mexican-American War hero Bre- vet Brigadier General Sylvester Churchill, was formed in 1861. Churchill County encompasses approximately 4,900 square miles of agricultural lands, open deserts, majestic mountains and val- leys in the heart of Nevada. Water for irrigation comes from the Newland’s Project, the first federal reclamation project in the United States. Fallon Founded in 1908, the city of Fallon is the county seat of Churchill County. One of the early farms in Churchill County was owned by Mike Fallon, for whom the town was named. Local residents enjoy living in a small rural town with a rich west- ern heritage. Fallon, with its surrounding countryside, is a green and lush agricultural haven, earning the town its nickname, “Oa- sis of Nevada.” The City of Fallon is home to approximately 8,700 residents and the population of Churchill County is approximately 26,000 residents.
