Bristol Bay Borough LEPC General Emergency Preparedness Guide

Find Out What Could Happen To You • Ask what disaster is most likely to occur where you live. • Learn your community’s warning signals.

Create a Family Disaster Plan • Discuss most likely types of disaster. • Pick two places to meet:

#1 Outside the home. #2 A neighbor’s house.

• Ask about your work plan. • Ask about your school plan.

• Ask an out-of-state friend to be a contact. • Discuss what to do in case of an evacuation.

Complete This Checklist:

Post emergency phone numbers. Teach your children how to call 911. Install smoke detectors in your home. Have basic first aid supplies on hand.

Stock emergency supplies in home. Determine best escape routes from home. Teach family members to use fire extinguisher. Show family how to shut off fuel and electrical sources.

What do I do for.....? Hazardous Chemicals Release-Ammonia or Chlorine: 1. Move indoors quickly.

2. Close all doors and windows. 3. Shut down ventilation system.

4. Seal all doors, windows and heating vents. 5. Move to smaller, interior room of building. 6. Tune to emergency radio or TV for further information.

Petroleum Spills: 1. If you smell fuel or see sheen from a petroleum product, shut off any ignition source. 2. Try to prevent further contamination. For All Petroleum Spills or Chemical Releases: 1. Contact Bristol Bay Borough Dispatch at 911. 2. Report the incident to the State of Alaska, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC): • During work hours: 1-907-269-3063 • After hours, weekends and holidays: 1-800-478-9300 3. Also report the incident to the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802. They will notify the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and/or the Coast Guard.
