Chaw’se is the native name for the mortar holes that were used to pulverize acorns, nuts, seeds, and berries. The rock is covered with 363 petroglyphs. Clampus Vitus Wall of Comparative Ovations. Railtown 1897 State Historic Park 209-984-3953 A 26-acre Jamestown roundhouse and shop complex is located within this historic state park. Visitors can ride steam trains and tour the living museum. Roaring Camp Mining Co. 209-296-4100 A 49ers gold camp with prospector’s cabins, snack bar, and swimming on Mokelumne River. Shenandoah Valley Museum 209-245-6554 A museum about the early farm history and wine-making that is a part of a Califor nia Historical Landmark. It is housed in one of California’s oldest wineries. Founded in 1856 by the Uhlinger family from Switzerland, it has been in continuous opera tion since before the Civil War. Full-scale horse-drawn wagons, farm implements, wine-making tools, furniture, and antiques. Located in Plymouth. The Sierra Nevada Logging Museum 209-795-6782 This museum was established to narrate the history and its cultural and social im pact on the region. The museum consists of two sections: an outdoor site at the west end of White Pines Lake, where the “shell” of the permanent museum building was built in 2001. Thursday through Sunday – Noon until 4 p.m., located at 2148 Dunbar Rd, Arnold. At the outdoor site, visitors will encounter a steam donkey, two caterpillar tractors, logging arches and a portable sawmill. The indoor site includes videos, recorded oral histories, photo albums, and logging displays. Open Satur days, 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Tours are available for school groups.
