Murphys Creek Theatre “Theatre Under The Stars” 209-728-8422 www.murphyscreektheatre.org Theatre Under The Stars is an outdoor theatre festival at Stevenot Winery’s intimate outdoor amphitheatre. Visit the Frog Hop of Fame The city of Angels Camp is the home of the Jumping Frog Jubilee. Since 1928, when the city paved its main street and held a frog jump competition, the Jumping Frog Jubilee has drawn both spectators and frog jumpers from around the world. The frog jump was modeled after Mark Twain’s short story entitled “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” In 1938, the County Fair and the Jumping Frog Jubilee were combined into a single event. Each year, hun dreds of “jockeys” enter their frogs into the competition. The winner takes home a generous cash prize and trophy. World record holders receive a trophy and an even bigger cash prize. A plaque engraved with the names of both the winning jockey and frog is embedded into the sidewalks of downtown Angels Camp. Those plaques make up the Frog Hop of Fame. Today, there are more than 70 plaques on the Frog Hop of Fame, including one commemorating Mark Twain’s Dan’l Webster and his jockey, Jim Smiley. This particular plaque can be found on the sidewalk in front of the Angels Hotel, where Twain first heard the tale of the jumping frog.
