Understanding Your Wiring System

STANDARD NETWORK INTERFACE (SNI) INSTALLATION PROGRAM The Commission has also ordered Volcano Telephone Company to install SNI devices over a ten-year period. This replaces the existing telephone protector. The SNI device protects the premises from power surges coming over the telephone lines, it allows the customer to perform a simple test to determine if the inside telephone wiring is working properly, and it serves as the official demarcation point between the wiring which is the customer’s responsibility and that which is the telephone company’s responsibility. If a customer has a problem with his inside wiring prior to the conversion to the new SNI device, the company will install the new SNI device at no charge. If it is found that the customer’s wiring is at fault, however, and the customer requests that a repair be made, then the hourly rate which appears on the rate schedule on the previous page will apply.

The connection of your inside wire facilities to the Volcano Telephone Company Network is accomplished through a device called the Standard Network Interface (SNI). Lo cated on the inside of the SNI is a modular jack that permits you to test your equipment (telephone or inside wire) when there is a problem, and to avoid certain repair costs. This jack provides access to the Network and unauthorized use of your line is possible. To avoid the possibility of unauthorized use and the resulting charges to your tele phone bill, secure the device with a padlock and monitor the activity near the device.
