CLIMATE The climate of the immediate service area can best be described as mild, having an average temperature of 59 degrees. Rainfall averages 48 inches per year. GOVERNMENT Each county’s governing body consists of a commission with the county executive serving as chief executive officer. In addition, the communities of Alexandria, Auburntown, Dowelltown, Gordonsville, Liberty, Smithville and Woodbury have governing bodies consisting of the mayor-council form. Area state parks include Edgar Evins State Park on Center Hill Lake, Cedar Forest State Park in Wilson County and Rock Island State Park near DeKalb County. Another point of interest is DeKalb County’s Joe L. Evins Appalachian Center for Crafts where the tradition of the old-time craftsman lives on. UTILITIES Electric Service is provided by Tennessee Valley Authority through area companies. Located in the service area are Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperative, Caney Fork Electric Membership Cooperative and Smithville Electric Systems. In addition, Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation serves a portion of DTC Communications sub- scribers. The only gas company serving the area is Middle Tennessee Natural Gas District whose source is East Tennessee Natural Gas Com- pany. Telephone and telecommunication service is provided by DTC Communications. MEDICAL FACILITIES Hospitals located within the service area are Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage, St. Thomas Hospital in Woodbury and St. Thomas Hospital Smithville. Other hospitals in Lebanon, Murfreesboro, Cookeville, McMinnville and Nashville serve the medical needs of area residents.
